The Purdue Basketball program experienced a surprise development on Monday. It was announced that center Matt Haarms is entering the NCAA transfer portal and will play his senior season elsewhere.

The report was confirmed by Purdue SID Chris Forman in an official announcement from the athletics department.

Haarms is coming off a 2019 season that featured averages of 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in 29 appearances. He shot 52.4 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from beyond the arc, and 63.4 percent on three throws.

What the box score doesn’t show is the paint presence on defense he provides at 7-feet, 3-inches. He ranks fourth all-time in career blocks (210) in the history of the Purdue men’s basketball program.

It remains unclear where Haarms will end up deciding to transfer, but now, other schools will be able to contact him. He can withdraw his name at any time that he pleases as well but there is currently no indication of that being a possibility.

One potential option that stands out for Haarms is the idea of transferring to Kentucky. With the possibility of Nick Richards and EJ Montgomery both leaving the program for the NBA Draft, they could be left with a major need for an established center for 2020-21.

As far as the future for Purdue Basketball is concerned, they will likely need to turn to Emmanuel Dowuona in a larger role. Standing at 6-feet, 10 inches, he is their best option to make up for the size they are losing from Matt Harmes deciding to transfer.
