Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts could not be more excited about the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. They may not have a first-round pick after trading it to land star defensive end DeForest Buckner, but they do have the No. 34 and No. 44 overall picks in the second round.

With those two picks, the Colts should be able to find two impact players.

ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. has released his new mock draft with the draft just over a week away. He has the Colts taking Baylor wideout Denzel Mims at No. 34 and Washington quarterback Jacob Eason at No. 44.

Here is the reasoning he gave for the Colts taking Eason with their second second-round pick.

Surprised? Don’t be. Philip Rivers is a stopgap for a team trying to get back to the playoffs, and Jacoby Brissett is under contract only through the 2020 season. Eason, who has a massive arm and a 6-foot-6 frame, could be the perfect understudy for Rivers. Eason isn’t ready to play immediately, so he needs a coaching staff that will be patient.

Bringing in a playmaking wide receiver like Mims would be huge for the Colts as well. So far this offseason, they have not addressed the wide receiver position. They have T.Y. Hilton, Zach Pascal, and Parris Campbell as their top options right now.

Eason has huge potential, but as Kiper mentioned, he isn’t ready to play right now. Learning behind Rivers would be a huge plus for him to start his career.

It will be interesting to see what route the Colts choose to go this year in the NFL Draft. If they come away with these two guys, it would be a major win.
